FAQs Camp HLC Fairview Lakes 2016

  • What are the cabins like?
All cabins are log cabins with electricity and full bathrooms, with showers. The cabins have heat and windows. Each cabin has bunk beds and sleeps at least ten. All HLC campers will be together in a group of cabins.  Males sleep together in a cabin(s) and females sleep together in another cabin(s).
 
  • What is Fairview Lakes like?
The camp is located on 660 scenic acres with a 110-acre lake that adjoins the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and historic Appalachian Trail. Click here for a link to the YMCA website. Here is a link to a camp map.
 
  • What should I bring to camp?

  • Where can families who are not attending camp stay locally?
Holiday Inn Newton, 6N Park Dr, Newton, NJ  07860.  Call 866-715-0006.
 
  • What about the weather?
All camp activities occur rain or shine, unless there is a thunderstorm or heavy rain. All campers should bring a rain poncho and sunscreen!  This time of year it is usually warm during the day and cooler at night.
 
  • What is the fee to attend camp?  
Camp is free for our ALS families. It is provided by Hope Loves Company and our sponsors.
 
  • How is cell phone coverage?  
Cell phone coverage at the camp is very spotty. In case of an emergency with no cell phone coverage, campers can be reached by calling the Fairview Lake office 9am to 5pm 973-383-9282, after 5pm call 973-383-1339.
 
  • What happens if there is an emergency?  
All YMCA staff are trained in CPR, first aid, oxygen use and AED (automated external defibrillator) use.  There are several AEDs and oxygen tanks available on site.  HLC's Jodi O'Donnell-Ames is an EMT. The local hospital is about 10 miles away in Newton, NJ. There is YMCA staff at the camp 24 hours a day. All cabins are equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Emergency YMCA numbers are provided to HLC chaperones. Emergency phones are available in the dining hall.
 
  • How will my child be supervised?
All campers are supervised by HLC chaperones. HLC does meals and activities together as a group. All of our cabins are together at the camp. There will be a minimum of two chaperones per cabin.
 
  • What are the activities like?  
YMCA activities are led by YMCA staff. YMCA staff are friendly, fun and well qualified to lead group activities. HLC staff will also led some group activities.  Some of the activities are divided by age. The activities are fun, get to know you games and team building exercises. HLC does all activities together as a group. See the activity page for more information. 
 
  • How is the food?
The food is provided by the YMCA. All meals are in the dining hall, see YMCA map, and are eaten together as a group. The meals are varied, nutritious and delicious! A salad bar is usually provided. The dining hall is always open with coffee and water available. Bring a water bottle to refill during your stay. 
 
  • Can special dietary needs be accommodated?
Yes, special dietary needs can be accommodated. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have special dietary needs.
 
  • How do I get to Fairview Lakes?
The camp is located in Stillwater, NJ near the Delaware Water Gap. See directions to Fairview Lakes on the YMCA website.  It is recommended that you arrive before dark on Friday night. The camp is located in a remote, wooded area.
